Raw (2016). Plush Dinosaur, I challenge you!

According to the plot, the main character of the film, a girl named Justina, goes to veterinary college. Her family has a strict mother who raised her daughters to be vegetarians and takes it, judging by the opening scene in the diner, extremely seriously.

Arriving at her destination, Justina encounters harsh morals in this place. As it turned out, in the local veterinary college, as in the army, cruel hazing reigns. Even worse, upon arrival she undergoes a rite of passage from the senior students – to eat raw meat. If you refuse, they will kill you, so our poor sheep has no choice but to taste, so to speak, the “sinful fruit”.

Movie title. "Raw" in English means more than just "raw". Other meanings of this word: rough, untamed, inexperienced, sensitive. These words can describe the main character of the film. “Inexperienced” would be suitable for the period before her “transformation”, other words after.

Among the older students is her older sister Alexia, who pushes Justina towards adulthood. Her advice and instructions do not bode well from the very beginning. First, he will give her an extremely provocative dress, then he will force her to do hair removal of the intimate area, and then he will show her by example how to overcome the emerging hunger. As for the latter, after the initiation ceremony the girl begins to be drawn to raw meat, and then even to human flesh. At the same time, Justina changes in character and becomes more liberated. This is not explained logically until the very end of the film, and for almost the entire film you perceive it as some kind of mystical plot element.

However, the theme of that same cannibalism in the film is closely intertwined with the growing up of the main character. I do not agree with comparisons of American critics with Cronenberg’s work. It’s still a little different here. And the film itself, in fact, is not a conventional horror film, “Raw” is rather an unusual drama about growing up. Although there are still horror moments in the film, and some more.

The soundtrack by Jim Williams is magnetic here. It is simply filled with some kind of tense, frightening, alarming dark energy that fascinated me throughout the entire film.

The girl’s name Justina comes from the ancient Roman language and means "decent". This is the word that can be used to describe her at the beginning of the film. She is modest, honest, kind and reasonable. She has such a face, just like, “Mi-mi-mi, go away, oh my God.”.

Actress Gerens Marillier is wonderfully good and convincing. I wouldn’t be surprised if she, like the other actress of the acclaimed European film “The Life of Adele,” is invited to Hollywood in some stupid James Bond movie. Mark my words. Ella Rumph as her sister also does an amazing job in her own way.

Frame analysis (no visual spoilers).

The video sequence in the film plays on contrasts. One scene can be beautiful and bright, and the next one will plunge you into such a crazy nightmare that you may feel sick. The film changes its mood. There is black humor, melodrama, horror and a bunch of different shades that sometimes evoke an unusual feeling. Well, that is, in the film, for example, there is a scene where, without spoilers, I didn’t know whether to laugh or be horrified by what I saw on the screen. I got goosebumps in that very scene, and at the same time I wanted to laugh out loud at the situation. It’s so fucking weird and it’s hard to describe.

Justina. First blood.

In the frame we see the first scene where our main character sees a drop of blood. From this point on, the film slowly begins to take off. Somewhere in the heart a thought flutters and flashes: now it’s a drop, and then… The film prepares the viewer and that’s great.

If in Stephen King, the heroine, a girl drenched in blood, became a monster, then here it has almost no effect on Justina. As you can see, rather the opposite, the girl is happy. Just think, strange customs at veterinary college. Trifle! You can endure it.

Sister knows best.

Notice how the frame is framed. https://yajuegocasino.co.uk/ We see the dissatisfied face of the older sister Alexia and the confused face of Justina at the same time.

College cafeteria.

Everything is filled with the red color of blood. Blood-blood-blood, reminds us of the movie. We actually have a film here about a cannibal girl, I haven’t forgotten yet? The game with colors in the film is excellent, as you can see for yourself.

Newbie and Senior.

Next is a still from the scene in the toilet. Pay attention to the setting and the separation of the two characters in the frame. One new girl in college is our heroine, and on the right, of Asian appearance, is the eldest, soon to be discharged. Cool solution.

Innocent thirst for human flesh.

The first scene where Justina tastes human flesh. I like the sweet, kind face of actress Gerens Marillier in this frame. She’s like, "What am I? I’m okay. Why are you looking at me?»

Notice how this feeling of oppressive space is created in the frame. The blanket, like a falling ceiling, presses Justina to the bed.

Feel free to open the spoiler. It’s not what you thought… perverts!
As you can see, the triangle in the frame forms the heads of a lustful couple dancing and the girl’s arm is bent at the elbow. In the center of the triangle is Justina’s face. The camera goes through the triangle in this scene, focusing on the "transformed" main character, who is ready to "tear and throw".

Raw is a lyrical drama, but not about cannibalism, but about the growth of a young girl into a woman. A very unusual girl, yes, and yet. I will not be wrong if I say that the film can make you angry, denial, misunderstanding and even nausea. The latter is more likely due to truly hellish scenes. Your stomach should be impenetrable and strong as a rock. You risk spending the night in nightmares and waking up not only in a cold sweat, but also in your stomach’s “processed” dinner. Is it worth it? It’s hard to say. I took a risk and did not regret it, having received both great aesthetic pleasure and writing for thought, as well as terrible moments etched in my memory.

Raw this is a strange movie. This is a wonderful movie. Crazy as hell I would even say. But weird in a good way. We also need unusual cinema. Not all movies have to be Schindler’s Lists, Odysseys and superheroes. Movies like Raw are also valuable in their own way and can give you an incredible experience.

I can’t recommend this movie to everyone. At your peril. But if you are not narrow-minded and, as the Americans say, look at things “with an open mind,” then this film will charm you with its contrasts and drama.

Please don’t rush to conclusions about this film after watching it. “Digest” it properly in your head and only then make a final verdict for it.

And what prevented you from cutting off the excess in some banal Paint?? It’s as if the presence of something secret has nothing to do with it at all.

Long live the anthem Phuman eatingTOoh flesh!

This is also proof that I took the screenshots myself.) Not that taking a screenshot is a big deal, but… still.

Well, I only have one counterexample left – in reviews we don’t launch the game in a window and then don’t show what the desktop looks like with this window.

Closer to the point, you are watching “not a movie for everyone”? The plot of the film sounds intriguing to you? Did it make you curious about the painting??

>film about a girl growing up into a woman.
>main actress of 1998

I took screenshots using print screen. It makes it easier to catch the shot I need. And I have nothing to hide – the desktop is just like a desktop. Nothing provocative.

I decided that too much is not in the way. The screenshots are high resolution and in general everything is clearly visible, especially if you open them in a new tab or just click on one of them.

But… um… damn, I couldn’t think of anything else 🙁

But he defended the author of the blog as best he could))

The idea seems interesting. I think I’ll add the movie to my never-ending list of things to see.

The film is a rare trash. Life in THEIR “study” is fully revealed.
But the characters and motives in the characters – zero logic.
It may only appeal to those who have spent 150-200 hours in the horror/thriller genres in their entire lives.
Then I advise you to watch the film – Bite (2015) … you might like it ..
